In the heart of Oost-Souburg is the Carolingische Burg, an impressive ring-walled castle from the 9th century. This circular earthen wall with moat was built at the time to protect the local population from Viking raids. With a diameter of about 160 meters, it is one of the best preserved fortresses in Zeeland. A walk along the rampart offers a unique view of this historic defensive structure.
