About the Casemates

About the Casemates

The Vlissingen Casemates are an impressive historic structure that is part of the coastal defense system. Located on the promenade and built by order of Emperor Charles V in the 16th century, the Casemates played an important role in protecting the city and the Westerschelde River. The fortifications consist of a network of underground corridors, storerooms and casemates, which were used over the centuries for various military purposes. A visit to the Casemates offers a glimpse into Vlissingen's rich military history, from the Eighty Years' War to World War II. Visitors can wander through the corridors, while informative panels provide insight into the past of this unique place. The Kazematten is a special experience for history buffs and families who want to better understand Vlissingen's defensive and strategic location.
