Irene deliberately chose Scheldestraat. "When this building became available, I knew immediately: this is where I want to start my business." By now she has grown attached to the neighborhood. "Sure, the street has changed a lot recently but this too is Vlissingen. The Scheldestraat feels like a village within the city. Folk, warm, diverse, people here accept each other as they are."
A striking feature of the salon is the colorful mural by artist Kevin Zuidweg, in which the Scheldt River occupies a prominent place. "A clear landmark. People immediately know where we are."
For the future, Irene especially hopes Vertigo stays the way it is. "We have it good. Maybe someday a bigger cafeteria," she says with a smile. "But other than that, we are very happy."
As for Scheldt Street, she has a clear wish: "Let this street shine again. Give it the attention it deserves. The potential is there. I hope more nice people will join and there will be more involvement. The Scheldt Street belongs to all of us."
