Keyf-i Alem is more than a bakery. It is a place where a boy with no fixed abode gets help filling out papers. Where a local resident on crutches is lovingly addressed. Where young people get a chance at a fresh start through the probation department. "We need to take care of each other more," Yeter says simply. And she does, every day.
For her husband, who can no longer work outside the home due to illness, the lunchroom is also a form of day care. And with her daughter, who works in healthcare, Yeter dreams of a new initiative: a day care center for the elderly, with coffee, attention and homemade treats.
Yeter calls Scheldestraat "the most beautiful street in Flushing." A neighborhood where cultures come together, where contact is natural.
Those looking for a place where you get more than just a good lunch should be at Keyf-i Alem. Here you taste the flavor of Turkey, but most of all the power of genuine attention. Whether you come for a sandwich, a baklava or just a chat, Yeter is there for you. With a smile, and perhaps a life story to remember.
