Homemade Christmas cards by Geertruud Smit
Gertruud Smit (1956) invites you to a special and personal exhibition: A variegated collection.
For the first time, she will display her impressive collection of homemade Christmas cards - a creative tradition she has continued with love and dedication for decades.
What began as a simple way to send personalized Christmas greetings grew into a rich collection full of memories, experiments and inspiration. Each year, Gertruud designs and creates nearly 200 unique cards, all handcrafted. Behind every card is a careful process: from the first idea and sketch to figuring out the most efficient way to realize the design. During this creative process, Christmas songs fill the room, while thoughts go out to the friends and family for whom the cards are intended.
The exhibition shows not only the versatility of her designs - from classical to playful, from minimalist to exuberant - but also the dedication and pleasure with which they are made. In recent years, moreover, many cards contain short poems or haikus that Gertruud writes herself and translates into German and English for her international friends. Her love of language is also evident in her hobby of translating English Christmas carols for the Evensongs at St. James Church.
As such, A Colourful Collection is more than a survey of creative Christmas cards: it is an intimate glimpse into a tradition of attention, connection and craftsmanship. An inspiring exhibition that shows the value of something made by hand, heart and a touch of Christmas magic.
The exhibition is free to enter and view during opening hours.
