Music for Advent and Christmas
The world-renowned Choir of Trinity College Cambridge performs in Flushing. The choir is considered the fifth best choir in the world. The ensemble consists of about thirty singers and two organists, all students at Cambridge University.
Trinity's rich choral tradition dates back to the fourteenth century, when former Chapel Royal choristers went to study at King's Hall, later part of Trinity College. In the 1980s, Richard Marlow brought a major innovation by admitting women's voices. Under the leadership of Stephen Layton (musical director from 2006 to 2023), the choir pioneered live streaming of church services. Since January 2024, Steven Grahl has led the choir. He continues the impressive musical legacy.
During the university term, the focus is on singing the liturgy in the college chapel. The repertoire is broad and includes music from both the Catholic and Protestant traditions. Outside of university terms, the choir regularly performs in prestigious concerts and festivals. For example, it has collaborated with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the City of London Sinfonia, Britten Sinfonia and the Academy of Ancient Music, among others. Highlights include performances of Bach's Hohe Messe, Poulenc's Gloria, Haydn's Nelson Mass and Handel's Dettigen Te Deum.
The choir enjoys international fame and has accomplished many recordings (its website has a large archive of more than 7,500 compositions sung live). The choir tours through
Europe, the US, Canada, Southern Africa, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Peru and Australia. So don't miss this performance in Flushing.
