In Vlissingen's lively Scheldestraat, where local entrepreneurs color the streetscape, you'll find a store where craftsmanship and art have embraced each other for over thirty years: Ochre. This artisan frame shop is not only a trusted address for custom-made frames, but also a popular place for artists' materials and personal advice. Behind the counter are Jacques and Marlyne Verleg, a duo who have made their mark on the cultural face of Flushing with dedication and love for their craft.<\/p>\n

A name full of color and meaning<\/h2>\n

The name Ochre was carefully chosen. \"It is a warm, earthy color that appears in almost every painter's palette. Short, powerful and recognizable, exactly what a good name should be,\" Jacques says. The business was founded in 1989 by Marlyne, originally from the Philippines, who dreamed of having her own store. In the early years, the focus was on art sales and painting supplies, but soon the demand for custom frames grew. It turned out to be a golden opportunity.<\/p>\n

From sea to business<\/h2>\n

While Marlyne was the beating heart of the store, Jacques worked for years at sea as a dredger and later with Oceanwide. \"When I was ashore, I would jump in and help out in the store,\" he says. The store has since expanded to include its own workshop and living quarters, and Jacques is a full-time framer. Today, Marlyne mainly handles the administration. A real family business, then, with both feet firmly planted in the Vlissingen clay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n \n
