About Fort Rammekens
Discover Fort Rammekens, the oldest sea fort in Western Europe, located near Ritthem on the Westerschelde River. Built in 1547, this fort played a crucial role in the maritime history of Zeeland. It served to protect and control the shipping routes to Middelburg and Antwerp. Over the centuries, various occupiers, including the Spanish, English and French, left their mark. Today, the fort is a serene place where visitors can wander through the historic corridors and enjoy the view of the Westerschelde. From April through October, Fort Rammekens is open to the public on weekends.
