Deeply hidden within the fortifications of Vlissingen lies a special monument from the time of Napoleon: the Oostbeer. An imposing fortification from the early nineteenth century.

Fortified city of Vlissingen

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Vlissingen played an important role in the defense of the Western Scheldt. Emperor Napoleon had the city expanded into a modern fortress with forts, ramparts, canals, and defensive works. The Oostbeer was built to regulate the water level in the fortress canal and simultaneously repel enemy attacks.

Anyone visiting the Oostbeer today discovers a hidden part of this impressive defensive system. The thick walls, arrow slits, and underground corridors show how ingenious Napoleonic-era fortification engineering was.
