The store is a feast for the senses. On one side you will find an extensive assortment of cosmetics, from hairpieces and braids to caring oils. On the other side is the beating heart of PREM: the food section. The shelves are full of herbs, oils, bohemia and spices from Surinamese, Indian, Asian, Antillean and African cuisines.
"Surinamese cuisine is perhaps the richest in the world," Prem says with pride. "So many cultures come together in it. We want to let that diversity be tasted here."
Those who don't have time to cook for themselves can choose from a changing selection of homemade dishes. Favorites are the roti, pom, fresh baras and lemper.
Tropical Shop PREM is more than a store; it is an anchor in the neighborhood. "When we started, we were the second foreign store in Flushing. Now the Scheldestraat is a melting pot of cultures, with almost no vacancy. That is special," said Prem.
After years of dedication, Prem and his wife are preparing for a new phase. The store will pass into the hands of their sons. "We have built something beautiful. Now it's time to pass the baton. But of course we will remain involved - this will remain our second home."
