The store is a lively meeting place for people from all backgrounds. "We see customers here from Morocco, Suriname, Poland, Bulgaria, actually from all over the world," Mohammed says. Scheldestraat is multicultural and you can see that in the store.
Regular customers like Lucia get chicken for Surinamese dishes, while others want to be called as soon as Mo gets something special in. "Sometimes we save something special for regular customers," he says, smiling.
Local resident Joke also walks into the store with her walker, looking for frozen shrimp. Mohammed helps her pack. "Look, look just like slippers, don't they? And only three euros!" She proudly shows off her new shoes, bought at secondhand store Taste & Enjoy across the street. It is a coming and going of cordial encounters. Despite the crowds, there is always time for a chat.
The store's name refers to the Moroccan town of Argana. Mohammed dreams of expansion. Not in Argana but just here in Flushing. "We want to offer ready-made Moroccan dishes. People are looking for convenience as well as taste. We want to offer that in an authentic way."
And there is another idea: "Why not have an annual fair? A celebration of flavors from around the world, where all the entrepreneurs showcase their cuisine. That would really bring this street to life."
