Did you know that there are more animals to be found in the city center of Vlissingen than you might think? Look around carefully, because on facades, buildings, statues, and special details, all kinds of animals have hidden themselves. From bold lions to graceful birds: during this scavenger hunt, you will discover the city in a surprising way.
Hit the trail, search for all the animals, and discover the most beautiful spots in the city center along the way. Great for children and adults who want to see Vlissingen through different eyes. Happy hunting!
Walk around the St. James' Church. Look closely in the garden and up above. Can you find the two birds?
Bonus: Scallop shells can be found outside and inside the church. Look for the monument. What is the meaning of the scallop shell?
Walk via Kerkstraat to Bellamypark.
Go to the water fountain. How many lion heads do you count?
Bonus: the fountain is a monument to 2 famous female writers from Vlissingen from the past. Which animal is in one of their names?
Walk to the colorful Iguana building.
iguana cares for reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. Preferably they want to release them into the wild. Some you can view indoors. Can you spot an animal through the glass?
Bonus: turn left, and walk down this street towards the Nieuwendijk. What animals do you discover on the facades of the old houses?
Go to the Maritiem MuZEEum at Nieuwendijk 11.
Stop in front of the left, light yellow house. Which two animals are depicted? Bonus: which family did this house used to belong to?
Go to the Emperor's Bastion.
Which animal is hidden under the cape of Michiel de Ruyter? Tip: make binoculars with your hands. Why do you think the creator of the sculpture chose this animal? Bonus: can you spot the other creature on the sculpture?
Go to the beach and look for traces of animals, such as shells, feathers, and little bones. Make a work of art out of these in the shape of an animal.
