Diep verborgen in de vestingwerken van Vlissingen ligt een bijzonder monument uit de tijd van Napoleon: de Oostbeer. Een imposante verdedigingswerk uit het begin van negentiende eeuw.

Vestingstad Vlissingen

Aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw speelde Vlissingen een belangrijke rol in de verdediging van de Westerschelde. Keizer Napoleon liet de stad uitbouwen tot een moderne vesting met forten, wallen, grachten en verdedigingswerken. De Oostbeer werd gebouwd om het waterpeil in de vestinggracht te regelen en tegelijkertijd vijandelijke aanvallen af te slaan.

Ga ondergronds

Wie vandaag de Oostbeer bezoekt, ontdekt een verborgen deel van dit indrukwekkende verdedigingssysteem. De dikke muren, schietgaten en ondergrondse gangen laten zien hoe ingenieus de vestingbouw uit de Napoleontische tijd was.
